Founded in 1935 (Showa 10).
“Tokiwa Shokudo,” a Showa-era diner still standing in Urawa.
Right along the old Nakasendo road, it’s the kind of place that always manages to fill you up.
Even on the day I visited, the seats would open up and—immediately—someone else would walk in.
A lot of families, too.
Not quite a “line,” but the flow never really stops.
Locals just drift in like it’s an extension of everyday life.
I ordered the Yakiniku set meal.
Thin slices of pork coated in a sweet-savory sauce.
The more you chew, the more the flavor unfolds—
and before you know it, the rice is disappearing.
And the rice is perfect.
Not too wet, not undercooked.
It catches the sauce, then leaves you with the lingering taste of the meat—exactly how rice should.
Reset with a bite of shredded cabbage,
then it’s meat → rice → meat → rice,
your chopsticks moving on autopilot.
The real value of places like this probably isn’t just the taste.
It’s not for “special occasions.”
It’s for the ordinary days—
the kind of meal that helps you properly finish the day.
Families come. Regulars come.
People eat quietly, then head back out.
Having a place like this still here…
honestly, it makes the city feel a little safer.
